Why Belgium?

For years I worked in evangelism and in various other ministries until January, 2015, when God allowed me the opportunity to take a trip to Belgium and Romania. I had been preaching to a group of people in both countries through Skype for a year at that point. We were having services through the internet every week and when it came time for me to take a vacation, I decided that I wanted to meet the people to whom I was preaching, face to face. While I was there in Belgium I was amazed to find a country with almost no gospel presentation whatsoever. I have found in the entire country very few Baptist churches, most of which are in the French speaking part  of the country. In the city of Ghent there is a population of 250,000 people, without one Bible believing Baptist church in hours of it. Upon my return to the United States I was amazed at what I had found but I had a full schedule with evangelism and was ready to get back to work. God however had a different plan, the first day I was back, on Sunday morning, as I was getting ready to go to the pulpit, God broke my heart for the people of Belgium and it has been that way ever since.

  • The Kingdom of Belgium is 11,787 square miles, roughly the same size as the state of Maryland. Only with a population of 11 million people, twice that of Maryland and larger than all but six of the U.S. States.
  • There are very few Bible believing Baptist churches in the entire country. Most of these are in the French speaking parts of the country.
  • In the northern Dutch speaking part of the country, which accounts for over half of the population, there are almost no Bible believing Baptist churches.
  • About half of the population identifies themselves as Catholics, although they have mostly never been to a Catholic church.
  • The other half of the people consider themselves atheists, however it’s not so much that they do not believe in God, as it is that they have never been taught anything about Him.
  • I have found while working one on one with the people there that there is an openness and even a hunger to hear more about God, as the majority of them have never been taught even the most basic of Biblical principles.
  • So because the Dutch people are naturally inquisitive this opens the door to learn about us and what we believe.
  • I have been told by mission boards that they cannot get missionaries to go to Belgium.
  • If you ever want to see a field white unto harvest but the laborers are few consider a country of 11 million people, with very few churches preaching the Gospel.
